ASAKANO GAMA is a pottery kiln helmed by its 16th generation owner Yoshihiro Shiga in Namie Town in Fukushima prefecture. Since the 1700, the kiln had stood through the test of time until the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake where it was forced to relocated to Koriyama City. There, the 16th-generation owner had to start from scratch - in a land not known to produce pottery. The kiln reopened in 2014 after successfully creating a new type of pottery with the signature brown clay native to Koriyama City. Named as Asakanoyaki, the iron-rich clay produces a coarse and deep reddish brown body upon firing. This, gives Yoshihiro a refreshed motivation to bring his craft and new vision of pottery to the next generation. The Double Wall Tumbler is made with a little ball inserted in between the wall structure which let off a light jingle as you pick the ceramic cup up for a drink.
