Portrait of a City (1860 - 1930)

Designed by Tye Sok Kuan

Just like any bustling port city, Singapore offered the high life for its expats and merchants. They were served by servant boys, Amahs, cooks, drivers and maids. Coolies on the other hand led a much harder life and they often found comfort in opium, prostitutes, gambling, and secret societies. Portrait of a City is an apt reflection of how individuals from different social and cultural backgrounds defined and built this nation together.
