Founded in 1882 with a history tracing to the Yoshino region, in Nara Prefecture, TANIOKA  SHITSUGEI has been producing Japanese lacquerware over five generations. Currently helmed by forth generation craftsman Toshifumi Tanioka, who was accorded “The Order of the  Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays”, and Kumiko Tanioka, the fifth-generation craftsman, the pair seeks to preserve the traditional technique of "Roiro Nuri” to the next generation. Roiro nuri is  widely referred to as the highest order of lacquer finishing among the many lacquering techniques. The prized Negoro-nuri Camellia-shaped Plate is a vessel that looks like a  camellia flower when viewed from the side. Lacquer is applied to Japanese wood many times to create the Negoro-nuri pattern.
