3rd generation Daruma doll maker, Mr Hirohisa Imai, aims to create a mix of traditional craft Daruma doll with contemporary designs. Located in the Toyoka Town of Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, 90 years old Imai Daruma Naya Co., Ltd. is perhaps the most important producer of Daruma in Japan.
A long established trade, Daruma dolls are often seen as a Japanese traditional doll that brings well wishes and good luck. By breaking the norms of how a Daruma originally looks like, Imai Daruma brings in a new context and designs of Daruma to the current generation. Hirohisa hope to work with international designers to give a new insight take on a very traditional Daruma doll.
